Hello Mobyletteforum!

Got a problem! I have a Mobylette AV 44 1964 with an AV 7 engine (the older type with a rounded top) nr 4 563 047. It has a Gurtner AR 8-7-525 carburetter and a Novi type M.A. nr G 001618 LS - 6V 18 W flywheel magneto with an external high tension coil.It is of the Dimoby automatic clutch-type. It has no Variator. The moped was intended for the Swedish market and is boght from an authorised Swedish dealer. As Mobylettes were quite rare in Sweden, I have´nt succeeded in my efforts to find an accurate manual. I need to know the correct timing. Different sources states different timings: 2, 2.8, and 3 mm BTDC. Which is the correct one? The trial and error method involves quite some work, so I would find it more easy to at least get a hint on a correct starting point.

Eagerly waiting for a response and best regards

Dear Kjell,

As far as I know the best timing will be 2.8 mm before BTDC.

Good luck and all the best, Joop

Hello Kjell,

End of 2011 we had some information exchange about the colour chaudron.
Well, the timing of most models equipped with the AV 7 after 1962 is 2.5 mm.
2.8 is just for the oldies of the fifties and early sixties. (correction!)
Kind regards,

Henk van Kessel (Harrie on this forum).

It is completely obvious that Harrie meant the fifties and early sixties

Thank you all for your hints concerning my timing problem. I have now tried both 2.8 mm and 2.5 mm before TDC, but without any significant difference in performance. In Sweden the maximum output of mopeds was restricted to 0.8 hp until 1961, when an output of 1.0 hp was allowed, so maybe my Moby is performing according to authority regulations.

Kjell

Hi Henk!

No veteran moped in Sweden was allowed to exceed 30 kph. Top speed of my Moby is about 25 kph according to my speedometer (new old stock) but I use 19" (23") x 2, 25" tires instead of the original 19" (23") x 2" tires. The speedometer gearbox is a Huret 1:1,8 (23"). Think it would at least top a bit more close to 30 kph ...

Kjell
